What are Autologous Serum Eye Drops?

Slant

Autologous Serum Eye Drops, or ASED, are made by combining a patient’s own serum with sterile, preservative-free saline. The concept of using serum as an eye drop is based on the biochemical similarities between an individual’s serum and natural tears. This solution contains growth factors and vitamins that may help heal epithelial defects and relieve symptoms of severe dry eye.

Going from feeling hopeless with my dry eyes to being confident enough to plan a trip to the Sahara without fear is all thanks to ASED. My doctors were extremely helpful throughout the way and it was easy getting the drops delivered to me.

ASED requires a prescription. If your doctor has decided that ASED are right for you, please read the information to understand how the process of obtaining your eye drops works.

ASED has a licensed and staffed phlebotomist perform blood draws on-site in a clean and controlled environment. Accommodations for an in-home blood draw can be made at an additional cost.

Please fast for 2 hours prior to your blood draw. Drinking plenty of water before your blood draw is equally important. If you must eat for medical reasons, do not consume any dairy products 4 hours prior to your blood draw. Dairy products include milk, yogurt, butter, ice cream, etc. If you consume dairy within 4 hours of your blood draw, your blood will not be drawn and you will be responsible for the phlebotomist’s fee.

Each time you order ASED, a new blood draw will have to be performed.

We will contact you at least two weeks before you open your last vial. We will make every effort to schedule your blood draw as quickly as possible, but we cannot guarantee a last minute appointment.

We are unable to schedule your refill without a current prescription. If your prescription has expired, please contact your doctor for a new prescription.

Your eye drops should be ready within 2 business days of your blood draw. Please call to confirm pick-up time to ensure proper personnel has been notified.

Delivery can be coordinated for an additional fee. Prior to shipment, ASED will call you to confirm the delivery address. You must make arrangements for someone to be present at the time of delivery. ASED cannot currently ship outside the state of California.

When received, you must unpack the box and verify your name on the vial labels. Immediately freeze all unopened vials.

  • DO NOT SHARE YOUR DROPS WITH ANYONE ELSE.
  • Once opened, each vial is good for one week.
  • Keep opened vial refrigerated at all times. Store in an insulated bag with cold packs or packed on ice when traveling.
  • You should continue to use all other prescribed medications while on ASED, unless your doctor advises you otherwise.
  • If you have any questions about your treatment, contact your doctor. ASED cannot provide medical advice.

ASED will need a copy of a current prescription from your doctor in order to schedule your blood draw.

You may order ASED in a 1, 3, or 6-month supply.

Insurance plans, Medicare, and Medicaid typically do not cover ASED. You are responsible for the cost of this therapy. SDEB accepts payment by cash, check, or credit card. Payment plans are available for 3 or 6 month supplies. Payment must be completed prior to the blood draw.
